The introduction of AI in knowledge work feels similar but supercharged. Never before have we had a tool that can emulate complex human-like output (text, images, code) at such scale. The worry is that this time the cognitive offloading isn’t just about memory or arithmetic, but about our higher-order thinking processes – analysis, creativity, judgment.
History tells us that human skills can degrade when we stop exercising them. However, it also shows we often find ways to coexist with new tech. The key is recognizing what not to relinquish. Just as teachers now encourage students to learn math fundamentals before relying on calculators, we may need to establish new norms in the workplace for how and when to leverage AI, so that we don’t skip the mental workouts that matter.
